The beauty of the south hams is its remoteness, the towns and villages all seem some what inaccessible. On of the most beautiful towns Salcombe sits at the entrance to the Kingsbury estuary, and the drive in to the town gives the feeling of glorious isolation. A trip on one of the ferry boats across the estuary to East Portlemouth increases that feeling even further.

Dartmouth harbour is spectacular and the chain ferry from Kingswear is a great way of arriving via car, alternatively the Paignton to Dartmouth steam Railway is also popular

Dartmouth

Dartmouth is famous as a naval base, and is home to the Brittania Royal Naval College. The Castle at the mouth of the harbour is a great place to visit, and boat trips to and from the town centre are a great way to visit here.

Travelling along the river gives a good view of the town and harbour a foot ferry can also be caught from Totnes. Or a car ferry is available from Kingswear.

Around the harbour, restaurants and bars serve good food throughout the day. Narrow streets wind through the town, and on a warm summers day and ice cream here is a real treat watching the busy town.

Salcombe

Salcombe is a beautiful town on a magnificent estuary, ideal for boating of all types. A real nautical haven. The town itself spreads along the front and the roads are narrow and quaint. Parking has always been a problem, and therefore the parks are invariably busy. 

The beaches are good, North And South Sands are popular, and East Portlemouth is a short foot ferry trip over the river.

Thurlestone

To the West of Salcombe lies Thurlestone and Hope Cove, this is a beautiful and spectacular area. The village is unspoilt and un commercialised, but the area is spectacular and with beautiful beaches and walks.
